Committee 2024 - 2025

Arthur Harrison - Chair
1st Assistant Editor & VFX Editor / Film & TV Drama
As a trainee assistant editor in 2016 I remember feeling the same anxiety many had felt when going out to find their next gig - how do I negotiate fairer deals for myself? What skills should I focus on? How much experience do I need to step up? I really wanted a form of guidance so that I could understand what was reasonable and fair in terms of expectations, both from myself and the companies I was working for. That’s when I first discovered Bectu. Bectu not only provides a network of support for post production and facilities workers but it also provides an active voice in improving working conditions for all of its members. That’s something I really wanted to be involved in which led to me joining up and being an active member.

Charlotte Baker - Newsletter Rep
1st Assistant Editor/ Film & TV Drama
The last few years have been exceedingly tough on our industry; I have watched post production houses that have stood for decades go under, and both skilled colleagues and talented trainees struggling to find work. I joined Bectu to become part of a team dedicated to helping workers through these struggles. I have followed The Rough Assembly for several years and utilised their resources in my work, from the Assistants Toolkit to the Rates Cards. I have also benefited socially from the Welsh Bectu branches. I’m excited to help improve working conditions and navigate these tumultuous times, especially for both freelancers and underpaid positions within post. Everyone matters and everyone should know their worth.

I rejoined Bectu because I was impressed with the work The Rough Assembly has done in the past few years. Frustratingly the progress on diversity and inclusiveness within our industry remains slow. There is huge amount of work ahead of us and we can only make positive change if we do it together as a community.

I joined Bectu to become part of a community working to improve both the working conditions and the quality of output in our industry. I think the inevitable race to the bottom of pay and conditions that comes without a strong voice for workers harms everyone when the quality suffers and the UK loses its global reputation as a place to make great film and television.

I joined Bectu to look for ways to support factual editors and assistants in our challenging and fast-changing industry. Our roles can be isolating and demanding, but I believe by working together we can make working in factual post a happier, healthier experience.

As someone at the beginnings of their journey within Post Production, I joined Bectu to better understand the inner-workings of this industry and to help address issues from the point of view of those who are just starting out. I hope that the maze to entry will one day be wholly accepting, accessible and easier to follow.
