Skills Checklists for the Editorial Department

We’re excited to share that our latest project for Screen Skills has been released! For the first time ever, we role descriptions for the Editorial Department (High End TV Drama), developed by our community!

This includes:

  • Editor

  • 1st Assistant Editor

  • 2nd Assistant Editor

  • Editorial Trainee

  • VFX Editor

We believe these descriptions will be a valuable resource for the industry and colleagues, helping to:

  • Define the responsibilities and skills required for each role

  • Standardise roles and promote consistency across cutting rooms

  • Show the differences between 1st Assistant Editors, 2nd Assistant Editors and Editorial Trainees

  • Create descriptions that can feed into job posts, CVs and hiring processes

  • Set expectations of what can be expected of each role and which tasks would justify a higher credit

  • Supplement the Assistant Editor’s Toolkit with extra resources you can use to to plan your career development

Harry Allpass, Assistant Editor

Please note that the phrases “Trainee Editor” and “Post Production Trainee” are not interchangeable with Editorial Trainee. “Trainee Assistant Editor” is interchangeable.

Bectu will also be sending these checklists to universities to support lecturers in tailoring their courses and content to skills that will be required of students when they enter the industry as Editorial Trainees.

This project was led by Committee members Arthur Harrison, Christopher Chow, Louisa Hawkins and Eleanor Adler for Screen Skills and on behalf of the Committee we would like to thank everyone, members, colleagues and crew who generously gave their time to give feedback.

If you have any questions or would like to share another idea with Bectu please get in touch with us at committee@theroughassembly.com.
